WHAT ‘To create the correct conditions, environment and experience to allow individuals of all abilities to develop, flourish and enjoy the sport of Boxing, whilst motivating and guiding individuals to reach their full potential’

WHY For the individual walking into the boxing club for the first time, the Coach will play a major part and arguably have the biggest influence on that individuals experiences.  Therefore, it is essential the coach understands the roles and responsibilities involved with this extremely rewarding position.

HOW Although not exhaustive, the following characteristics outline some of the many roles and responsibilities involved:

  • Advisor – Advising individuals on all aspects of the sport, from daily training to the correct equipment
  • Assessor – During every training session, the coach should consistently assess the individual’s development and performance
  • Counsellor – Individuals in every walk of life will have emotional problems from time to time, therefore the coach must be willing to try and resolve emotional problems on the basis that sharing anxieties can be relieving, reassuring and allow the individual to use sport as a positive mechanism
  • Demonstrator – Coaches MUST be able to demonstrate all technique and skills being taught
  • Friend – In sport, friendships are built up over years of working with an athlete, where personal relationships are intrinsically built.  As well as providing coaching advice, the coach can also become a friend (although the correct relationship must be maintained), who they can discuss their problems or share their success with
  • Information Gathering – From keeping abreast of all rules and regulations associated with boxing to data gathering of specific individuals needs, the coach is consistently learning, researching and developing in order to best serve their club and community
  • Fountain of knowledge – Boxers will have the utmost faith in their coach, and as such expect them to be able to answer any question they have
  • Instructor / Teacher – Instructing individuals in all aspects of their sport
  • Mentor – When people attend the Club training sessions, you are responsible to their parents and family, for ensuring that they are safe and secure. You have to monitor their health and safety during all activity and support them should they have any problems or sustain any injuries
  • Motivator – In order to get the best out of your members, you must motivate constantly in all environments
  • Organiser and planner – Planning of day to day training plans, in particular adapting to individual needs
  • Role Model – A person who serves as a model in a particular behavioural or social role for another person to emulate. The way you conduct yourself whilst in the presence of your club members provides an example of how they should behave.

You must be dynamic, your sessions must be particpant centred & funtional in terms of what each individual can do. You must be able to modify accordingly, and ensure the space, task & equipment is appropriate for each individual
